Bio & Overview
As a pediatric urologist, Sean Corbett, MD, specializes in caring for children with a wide range of urinary disorders, including congenital genitourinary abnormalities, congenital kidney conditions, dysfunctional elimination, and vesicoureteral reflux.
He also enjoys treating children with urinary dysfunction caused by spina bifida.
Dr. Corbett is passionate about making connections with pediatric patients and their families.
“Pediatric patients are especially fun to work with because you never know what you might encounter,” Dr. Corbett says. “But once you do understand how they want to be approached, I can put them and their families at ease so the focus can be on the care required. I try to maintain a calm demeanor, and this greatly facilitates keeping all parties at ease.”
As someone who has always enjoyed working with his hands and finding creative ways to fix things, Dr. Corbett has found pediatric urology to be an ideal career that melds together both interests. Fascinated by technology, Dr. Corbett especially enjoys the challenge of minimally invasive surgeries and bladder stone surgeries.
A California native, Dr. Corbett earned his undergraduate degree in biological studies at the University of California at Santa Barbara, followed by two years as a researcher at the University of California at Los Angeles.
After earning his medical degree at University College Dublin in Ireland, Dr. Corbett completed his general surgery internship and residency at the University of Vermont, and his urology residency at Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine. He went on to complete a pediatric urology fellowship at Texas Children's Hospital/Baylor College of Medicine.
Dr. Corbett joined the UVA faculty in 2008. He serves as chief of the Division of Pediatric Urology and co-directs the UVA Outpatient Surgery Center. One of his primary goals has been to expand pediatric urology services and reach patients from a wider geographic area.
Outside of work, Dr. Corbett enjoys spending time with his wife and children. As avid travelers, the Corbett family hopes to travel the world. He also is an exercise enthusiast, especially passionate about running and cycling. Dr. Corbett also loves to cook, and says his family enjoys super spicy foods.

Highlights
Meet Urologist Sean Corbett, MD
Hi, my name is Sean Corbett. I'm a urologist at the University of Virginia and I identify by pronouns he and him. My interest in medicine happened pretty early on, but along those same lines, my interest in pediatrics developed very early as well, in addition to my interest in surgery. And so, that's what my fellowship training specifically started up as, and then since I've been in practice, in addition to working with the pediatric population, I've also seen an increasingly large number of adolescents with questions regarding gender confirmation procedures, and that's where my practices evolved to include care of patients in transition, specifically for bottom surgery procedures. I'm just passionate about providing good care to patients, and passionate about making sure that that care is associated with good patient outcomes. That's one of the things we really try to focus on is, is how we can make that patient experience the best possible. Not only with the care that we provide, but with every aspect of their visit at UVA. If the patients are happy or the parents are happy about the care that they have received, or their child has received, that is reward in and of itself for me. That is what's really satisfying to me. That's what drives me to do what I do.
