Bio & Overview

Sean Reed, MD, is a family medicine physician who provides primary care to adult and pediatric patients, as well as gynecologic and obstetrical care for women. He performs a wide range of office-based procedures, including skin excisions, IUD placement, and joint injections.

“I particularly enjoy and am drawn to the humanistic side of medicine and strive to meet patients where they are in life,” he says. He enjoys helping patients to understand their health and serves as the director of the UVA Mini-Medical School. He is passionate about primary care and directs the Generalist Scholars Program, mentoring the next generation of generalists.

Dr. Reed thinks of himself as a Massachusetts native, though he has lived most of his adult life in the Mid-Atlantic. He studied political science at Syracuse University. He was a government relations consultant (lobbyist) in Washington, DC, and spent a year on Capitol Hill working for John Joseph Moakley, who was a member of the House of Representatives.

Almost a decade in the consulting industry convinced him to attend Tufts University and earn his medical degree from the University of Massachusetts. He completed his family medicine residency and a faculty development and evidence-based medicine fellowship at UVA. Dr. Reed is active in health policy initiatives at both the state and federal level.

His wife, Karin, is a teacher and they have two daughters. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time exploring new places and cultures with his family and gardening.
