Bio & Overview
As an OB/GYN doctor, Shannon Weatherford, MD, specializes in obstetrics and gynecology. She has decades of experience promoting the health of women with her career focused on:

She also has a special interest in caring for patients who have language, cultural, or socioeconomic differences and challenges.

She chose a career in medicine because of its focus on life-long learning. “I can use concrete skills to partner with my patients to promote their health and wellbeing, while being continually challenged to learn from them and others.”
Dr. Weatherford was raised in Richmond, Virginia. But for several years during childhood, she lived in Venezuela. During her undergraduate years at University of Virginia, she volunteered extensively with Madison House and Charlottesville Albemarle Rescue Squad.
She received her medical degree and did her residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at Medical College of Virginia (now Virginia Commonwealth University).
Before joining UVA Health, she worked in a private practice in Richmond, Virginia. There she developed a loyal clientele over 20 years. For several years, she also worked in and later became director of a homeless shelter in London, England.
Dr. Weatherford has sat on several boards and administrative committees in multiple hospital systems and in the private sector. She’s also assisted in legislative advocacy to promote the health and wellbeing of women.
