Bio & Overview

Steven M. Powell, MD, is a fellowship-trained gastroenterologist. He focuses his practice on assessing a person’s risk for developing colorectal cancer and working with patients who are at high risk for this disease. This includes individuals with inherited predisposition traits, such as Lynch syndrome or polyposis syndromes.

Dr. Powell shares: “I like to listen to patients first to see what they are feeling and thinking. I then develop a plan to try and help patients understand what is going on and how we might be able to improve their condition. I want patients to know I truly care about them.”

Dr. Powell was born in Aurora, Colorado, and grew up in the Midwest. He attended DePauw University in Indiana, where he majored in mathematics. He obtained his medical degree at Indiana University. He joined the UVA faculty in 1996 after completing gastroenterology fellowship training at Indiana and Johns Hopkins universities.

“I have always been interested in how the human body works and functions, so was drawn to the science and medical fields early on. I enjoy helping others, which makes working in the medical field ideal.”

Dr. Powell loves sports and always roots for the UVA Wahoos.
