Bio & Overview

Suzanne Jan de Beur, MD, has been an endocrinologist for 25 years. She specializes in caring for patients with osteoporosis, metabolic bone disease, and rare bone disease. “I feel like the most privileged person in the world to be entrusted with my patients’ health,” she says.

Recognized internationally for her expertise, Dr. Jan de Beur has been named as a Top Doctor by Baltimore Magazine, and she is Past President of the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research.

As a physician-scientist and a practicing endocrinologist, her clinical and research work focus on understanding rare and metabolic bone diseases at the basic level and translating these observations to patient care. Her work has contributed to the understanding of the genetics and physiology of a number of metabolic and rare bone diseases including pseudohypoparathyroidism, progressive osseous heteroplasia, and tumor-induced osteomalacia. Her efforts have led to the development of FDA-approved treatments for X-linked hypophosphatemia and tumor-induced osteomalacia, as well as osteogenesis imperfecta, for which a treatment is currently in development.

In addition, Dr. Jan de Beur sits on national and international expert panels that develop guidelines for the treatment of osteoporosis, X-linked hypophosphatemia and tumor-induced osteomalacia.

“The ability to use scientific inquiry and research to better understand health and disease and improve the lives of not only my patients, but many others, made me want to dedicate my life to medicine,” she says.

Born and raised in South Florida, Dr. Jan de Beur received her undergraduate degree in neurobiology from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. She attended Cornell University Medical College (now Weill Cornell Medical College) prior to moving to Baltimore, Md. to pursue her internal medicine residency and endocrinology fellowship training at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She remained on faculty at Johns Hopkins until she joined the UVA Health team in 2023.

Dr. Jan de Beur has two children and an English Springer Spaniel named Ezra. She enjoys traveling with her husband and watching women’s lacrosse, and can often be found cheering on her daughter, who is a goalie for the Amherst Mammoths.
