Bio & Overview

Dr. Cropley is a dermatologist, professor and chair emeritus of the Department of Dermatology at UVA. His clinical interests include general dermatology, skin disorders in medically complex patients, skin disorders in patients with kidney disease, and cutaneous lymphomas. 

A native of South Charleston, West Virginia, Dr. Cropley earned a BA in biology from UVA and graduated from UVA School of Medicine in 1984. He completed his residency in dermatology at Harvard Medical School in 1988. He served on the dermatology faculties at Harvard Medical School and the University of Massachusetts Medical School before returning to UVA to join the dermatology faculty in 2008. He chaired the Department of Dermatology from 2008-2014, and directed the dermatology residency program from 2008-2017.

Dr. Cropley’s wife, Cecelia, is a research administrator at UVA, and their son, Ian, is a graduate student. Dr. Cropley enjoys family time, cycling, travel, history (American Civil War, Highland regimental history, Second World War aviation and armor, and railroads of Virginia and West Virginia), playing jazz guitar and the highland bagpipe.

There is probably not enough room here to describe my experience. The team of a female doctor and residents were very courteous and informative. They asked me three times if I was comfortable having student observers. Twice I said yes. I usually do not have a problem with student observers. But this was a full body skin exam and one of the students was a male who I believe was Muslim. I have had Muslim physicians in the pass but was not required to fully undress. The third time, probably sensing my hesitation, the female doctor told me not to be afraid to say no. I am rather shy and old and was brought up very strictly regarding modesty. I said no and thanked her. I personally felt that I would lose respect by allowing a man whose religion may require that their female patients observe the modesty appropriate to their religion. I took the opportunity offered me to follow my own conviction to respect myself and the young man studying medicine. Enter the "doctor": who immediately asked me why I came there as he was booked a year in advance (I came there because UVA was recommended to me and I was quickly given an appointment). He then gave me a soft but rather arrogant scolding about refusing the student observation. He did not bother to ask me why. I did tell him that I usually did not have a problem about it. Later in the visit, he gave an opinion regarding some lab history that I know was incorrect. I did not contradict him. He lightened up during the examination and had a more cheerful countenance. But the damage was done. I felt humiliated and disrespected, more so than if I had gone against my conscience and allowed the young man to observe my examination. I am not a prude. I have been an RN. But I do believe humility and respect to very important in keeping the doors of communication and perception open. These are things that are quickly discernable if genuine. This is the only negative review I have ever given a physician. I usually just accept personality differences. But let's say I was not impressed.
