Bio & Overview
Thomas Floyd, MD, is a cardiothoracic and vascular anesthesiologist.
His current research focuses on the development of new imaging technology for monitoring and managing spinal cord injury and cerebral ischemia. He also researches how acute hypoxia worsens age-related cognitive problems in patients with heart failure, anemia, and chronic obstructive lung disease.
Floyd grew up outside of Philadelphia and majored in chemistry at Dickinson College. He earned his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania and completed his anesthesiology residency and surgery internship at the University of Minnesota.
After working in private practice for a decade, he completed a fellowship in cardiothoracic anesthesiology and studied functional MRI at the University of Pennsylvania.
Before coming to UVA, he served on the faculty at Penn, Stony Brook University, and the University of Texas Southwestern.
Floyd spent 15 years in the Navy supporting the U.S. Marine Corps as both a battalion surgeon for an arctic warfare unit and a battery surgeon for a heavy artillery unit.
His hobbies include trying to keep up with his sons, running his Siberian huskies, fishing, boating, and winter sports and camping. He and his family have a home near Acadia National Park in Maine and enjoy cruising between the Chesapeake Bay and the Canadian Maritime Provinces.
