Vanessa M. Shami, MD is professor of medicine and director of endoscopic ultrasound in the division of gastroenterology and hepatology at University of Virginia Medical Center. She completed her internal medicine residency as well as her gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Virginia. Subsequently, she completed an advanced therapeutic endoscopy fellowship at the University of Chicago.
Dr. Shami has received numerous teaching awards including the University of Virginia Department of Medicine Excellence in Teaching Award, and is an elected member of the University of Virginia Academy of Distinguished Educators. She maintains a busy clinical practice, which embraces her interests in Barrett’s ablation, upper and lower endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), GI oncology and pancreaticobiliary medicine. Her clinical research has led to numerous papers and she co-edited a text book on endoscopic ultrasound. Dr Shami currently serves as an American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Governing Board Councilor.
