Bio & Overview
Vanessa Torrecillas, MD, is a fellowship-trained laryngologist at the UVA Center for Voice and Swallowing. She specializes in the treatment of voice, airway, and swallowing problems.
Among her clinical interests are voice rehabilitation, laryngeal reinnervation, and gender-affirming voice care.
In every patient encounter, Dr. Torrecillas sees herself as a partner in the healthcare journey.
“It is my role as a physician-surgeon to listen to a patient's story, put together the clues and details of their history and physical symptoms, and to impart my knowledge, training, and skills to provide the best care possible.”
Dr. Torrecillas says. “I value patient participation in their healthcare and see myself as a guide on their path to wellness.”
After earning double bachelor’s degrees from the University of Arizona, Dr. Torrecillas earned her medical degree from The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. She completed a residency in otolaryngology/head and neck surgery at the University of Utah School of Medicine. She then went to the University of Michigan, where she completed a fellowship in laryngology.
Describing herself as compassionate and caring deeply about each of her patients, Dr. Torrecillas says she often finds herself thinking about them, their care plans, and their outcomes many days – and often nights – after she has seen them. Restoring patients’ voices is one of the most rewarding aspects of her job.
“I chose surgery because it is an incredible feeling to see the work you have done with your hands and how it has helped people,” says Dr. Torrecillas. “The best part of my job is giving patients their voice back.”
