Bio & Overview
Vijaya Vemulakonda, MD, JD, is a pediatric urologist whose treats children with urinary tract conditions, such as kidney blockages (UPJ obstruction), backward urine flow (vesicoureteral reflux), urethral obstructions (posterior urethral valves), and conditions where the bladder is exposed (exstrophy).
Her research includes developing guidelines to optimize surgical outcomes in children using multicenter collaborative research partnerships.
“I truly believe that I am a partner with my patients and their families,” she says. “I provide medical and surgical knowledge, and they provide expertise on their specific circumstances. This partnership affords the opportunity for meaningful conversations about goals of care, expectation setting, and shared decision making, which ultimately improves care.”
Dr. Vemulakonda was born in Blacksburg and grew up in Vicksburg, Mississippi. She studied political science at the George Washington University and graduated cum laude from Harvard Law School.
She earned her medical degree from the University of Mississippi. She then completed her urology residency at the Baylor College of Medicine and her pediatric fellowship at Seattle Children's Hospital, University of Washington School of Medicine.
Dr. Vemulakonda previously practiced at the University of Colorado/Children's Hospital Colorado, where she helped develop the Fetal Genitourinary Anomalies Working Group with the Colorado Fetal Center and the Congenital Anomalies of the Kidney and Urinary Tract (CAKUT) clinic at Children's Hospital Colorado. She was also the director of research and residency program director for the Division of Urology at the University of Colorado.
“I am so grateful to my patients for entrusting the care of their children to me. As a parent, I do not take that gift lightly and try to hold myself and my team to the highest standards to ensure we are worthy of that trust,” she says. “I also love watching the kids I care for grow up and am so appreciative of the opportunity that my job gives me to see these incredible people grow and thrive.”
