Carrie Sopata, MD, (pronouns: she/her) grew up in a small town in Maine. She got her undergraduate degree at Duke University, where she studied history and chemistry. After graduation, she joined Teach for America and taught second grade in an under-resourced area of Texas for two years. She later received her Master's Degree in Public Health from the University of Hawaii before attending medical school at the University of Texas, Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. I then studied Public Health at the University of Hawaii obtaining a Master's Degree. She completed her residency at Vanderbilt Univeristy in Nashville, Tennessee, where she served as chief resident from 2010-2011. She joined UVA in 2011. She is married with two young children and enjoys camping, traveling and baking.

I'm Carrie Sopata, I'm an assistant professor in obstetrics and gynecology. And I do all facets of the nine obstetrics and gynecology ... So that means I do deliveries, and I also do routine obstetric care, including prenatal care, and post-partum care. And then for benign gynecology, that's means I do well woman exams, and I also take care of problems ... like abnormal bleeding, abnormal pap smears, pelvic pain ... and then vulvar and vaginal skin conditions. And I really enjoy and like to teach patients about the problems that they're having, why they're having them, and then the choices that they have in terms of addressing those problems. It's very important to me that patients understand why things are happening with their body and what we can do to circumvent that or to make it better. I think my practice is unique because of the patient relationships that I have and the teaching that I engage with with my patients. I think that my patients appreciate that I spend as much time as I can with them, trying to get to know them and their problems and coming up with solutions for them.
