Robert K. Shin, MD, FANA, FAAN, is director of the Multiple Sclerosis and Clinical Neuroimmunology Division at UVA Health. He has a special interest in health disparities in multiple sclerosis and visual problems associated with MS and other demyelinating disorders. These include neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder. Shin serves on the board of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Shin graduated from Yale University before earning his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He completed a neurology residency and fellowships in neuro-ophthalmology and multiple sclerosis at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Meet Robert Shin, MD
I'm Dr. Shin. I'm a neurologist and neuro-ophthalmologist here at UVA Health. So I see individuals with multiple sclerosis or other neuro-immunologic conditions in the neurology department, but I also see individuals with visual issues in neuro-ophthalmology. I became interested in medicine back in the 1990s and back then there actually weren't any treatments for conditions like multiple sclerosis, for example. It's been very exciting to be involved with research and clinical trials and really get to put those treatments into practice helping individuals living with conditions like MS or NMO spectrum disorder. Within the multiple sclerosis and neuro-immunology space, I've become increasingly passionate focusing on issues of health equity. So we've observed that people with conditions like multiple sclerosis or NMO spectrum disorder may have different outcomes, which seem to be related to their race and ethnicity for example. So trying to understand better why we observe these differences and more importantly, how we can correct that and balance things out has become a real passion of mine. A new patient coming to visit us here at UVA Health in the MS and neuro-immunology division can expect to meet actually a team of individuals who are going to be focused on your condition. Effective treatment of these conditions requires a lot of expertise and familiarity with the different treatment options. And here at UVA Health, we actually have five or six providers who are very specifically focused on these neuro-immunologic conditions and how to treat them.
