Simon Telian, MD, FACS, is a surgical oncologist, or cancer surgeon. He treats patients who have cancer, including breast, melanoma, endocrine, and gastrointestinal cancers.
Telian earned his undergraduate degree at the University of California, San Diego. He completed his medical degree at Boston University School of Medicine.
After completing his general surgery training at Tripler Army Medical Center, he served on active duty overseas in Germany, with deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. Afterward, he completed a surgical oncology fellowship at the John Wayne Cancer Institute in Santa Monica, California.
Telian served a distinguished 26 years on active duty in the US Army. During his time on active duty, he practiced at the William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, Texas, and the Womack Army Medical Center at Fort Liberty in North Carolina. At the Womack Army Medical Center, he served as the Chief of Surgical Oncology and expanded the surgical oncology practice to meet the needs of the community.
He joined UVA Health to help expand cancer surgery care. He is passionate about community health partnerships and is dedicated to providing high-quality, compassionate care.

Meet Surgical Oncologist Simon Telian, MD
My name is Simon H. Telian. I'm a surgical oncologist at UVA Health. I'm a surgical oncologist, which is a cancer surgeon. I am part of a multidisciplinary team of doctors that treat patients with diverse array of cancers. During my medical education at Boston University, some of my mentors engaged in a multidisciplinary approach to patient care, and that really interested me. To be part of a team of doctors as opposed to just an individual doctor taking care of a patient, especially with something as important as cancer treatment, that's what really drove me to the specialty. UVA Health has been very unique. Most academic referral centers want patients to be brought to their main campus, but UVA's initiative to push surgical sub-specialists out to the community setting is what sets us apart. It's real important to be able to listen to a patient and give them time to really express what they've been going through. And it allows us as physicians to really understand and empathize with what the challenges are and can help us direct the aspects of multidisciplinary care that will best serve the patient.
