Bio & Overview
Sumeet A. Khetarpal, MD, PhD, is a cardiologist who specializes in lipid disorders and prevention of heart attacks. He cares for patients with inherited and complex lipid conditions, including genetic conditions such as familial hypercholesterolemia, elevated lipoprotein(a), and severe hypertriglyceridemia. His goal is to identify the patient-specific risk factors related to lipids that contribute to their heart disease risk and to prevent heart attack and stroke through advanced lipid-lowering therapies and personalized risk assessment.
Dr. Khetarpal earned his medical and doctoral degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied the genetics and biology of lipoprotein metabolism. He completed his internal medicine residency, cardiovascular disease fellowship and preventative cardiology training at Massachusetts General Hospital. He also pursued postdoctoral research training focused on cardiometabolic disease and exercise biology at Harvard Medical School and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
At UVA, Dr. Khetarpal directs a clinical program focused on lipid disorders and cardiovascular prevention. His research laboratory studies how lipid metabolism and exercise influence heart and vascular health, with the goal of developing new therapies for cardiometabolic disease.
“I work closely with patients to identify and treat the underlying drivers of cardiovascular risk,” he says. “By combining advances in lipid-lowering therapies with genetics and personalized risk assessment, we aspire to prevent heart disease before it develops.”
