Bio & Overview
John Harrison, DO, grew up in a family of 6 and knew early on that he was interested in medicine. His father’s best friend was a general surgeon, and Dr. Harrison knew that surgery interested him. After completing medical school, Dr. Harrison entered into the U.S. Navy, where he served as a medical officer for 4 years. Afterwards, he returned to his residency.
With his patients, Dr. Harrison believes that education is important. “When patients understand the problem, it’s much easier to understand the role of surgery, and how surgery will impact them both in the short and the long term,” he says. Helping his patients understand the process makes it easier for them to experience it.
Patients trusting him with their surgeries isn’t something Dr. Harrison takes for granted. “Patients put their trust and faith in you, and you must rise to that level. It’s because of this that there’s almost nothing we won’t do for our patients,’ he says.

Highlights
Meet John Harrison, DO
Hi, I'm John Harrison. I'm a general surgeon with UVA Health. I'm a general surgeon who sees all age groups, ranging from infants to the elderly. I am a true general surgeon in nature that I perform all aspects of general surgery. I truly enjoy explaining things to patients, seeing that light bulb go on, making it so that they understand why we're doing what we're doing, and not only why we're doing what we're doing, but why what we're doing is going to change them, and why they're going to feel this or see this or notice that. When patients smile, when you get a hug, when somebody's pain is gone, when they're living longer, whatever it is, you just feel good inside that you somehow contributed to that. I think people should choose UVA because we treat people here like a family. The staff is like a family, we get along like a family and treat each other, but every patient is just a new adoptee to the family, if you will, and we want everyone to be treated like our mother, our father, our sister, our brother, and we want them to come back, and not just have a good outcome or a good surgery, we want them to have a good experience.
