Michael Ragosta, M.D., is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular diseases and interventional cardiology. He specializes in interventional cardiology, heart valve disease, general cardiology and peripheral arterial disease.
Dr. Ragosta has been principal investigator or co-principal investigator on 10 clinical trials involving myocardial viability, coronary collateral circulation, coronary flow reserve, fractional flow reserve and myocardial contrast echocardiography. He has shared his research and experience through more than 40 invited lectures or visiting professorships and by authoring or co-authoring more than 120 peer-reviewed journal publications, book chapters and scientific abstracts. Dr. Ragosta is Medical Director for Interventional Cardiology at UVA.

[MUSIC PLAYING] MICHAEL RAGOSTA: I'm Michael Ragosta. And I'm the director of the cardiac catheterization laboratories at the University of Virginia Hospital. My practice is unique in that I am an interventional cardiologist. And what I get a lot of enjoyment out of is taking care of the very complicated patients with complex coronary disease. And one area in particular I'm known for is chronic total occlusion interventions, which are arteries that have been completely blocked, often for a very long period of time. Those are very difficult to open using conventional techniques. And I've learned skills and developed skills to open those kinds of arteries. What I find most rewarding about working at the University of Virginia is the collegiality we have. Just a great group of people here, both fellow physicians, the nurses, the technicians, secretaries. Everybody works together with the common goal of doing what's best for patients. What I'm most passionate about is patient care. I really enjoy taking care of patients, interacting with the patients and their families. I get a of satisfaction of that. It's very satisfying to have somebody who's quite symptomatic or quite ill and you do something, whether it's medicines, surgery, or working with some of the catheter-based procedures we have, and see them improve-- that's an extremely rewarding thing for us. I feel very privileged to be part of that. [MUSIC PLAYING]
