Patient Information
Amputee Care Clinic
Every Wednesday: 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
The Amputee Care Clinic is the first multi-disciplinary clinic dedicated to the care of amputees in the state of Virginia. We can help to manage problems with pain, swelling, contractures, skin and soft tissue coverage, and bony stability following amputation. Additionally, patients recently discharged from the hospital with an amputation will follow up in our clinic.
What to expect for their first appointment?
During your visit, your provider will ask you detailed questions about:
- Your amputation
- Personal experience of pain in your limb
- Things you have tried in the past to improve your pain
- Use of prosthetic or orthotic devices
- Current medications to treat pain in your limb
Your provider will perform a detailed examination of your limb. Diagnostic procedures, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or ultrasound may be arranged for future visits. Diagnostic corticosteroid injections may be arranged at subsequent visits. Your current prosthetic or orthotic device may be evaluated for fit, comfort, and function.
It's often helpful but not required to bring any previous medical records. Operative reports or imaging study images, or reports loaded on a CD can be helpful. It's helpful to bring any prosthetic, orthotic, or assistive devices you commonly use to your appointment.
No special preparation is required for the appointment.
