Bio & Overview
Arun Krishnaraj, MD, MPH, MBA, FSAR, FACR, is a professor of radiology and medical imaging. He is also the vice chair for quality and safety, director of the division of body imaging, and chief of the section of abdominal imaging.
He completed his residency at the University of North Carolina, where he served as chief resident. He completed fellowship training in abdominal imaging and imaging informatics at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he later joined the faculty at Harvard Medical School.
He received an undergraduate degree in public health with distinction, a medical degree with election to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society, and a master of public health with election to the Alpha Epsilon Lambda Honor Society, from the University of North Carolina. He also earned an MBA from the UVA Darden School of Business, where he was honored with the Faculty Award for Academic Excellence.
Dr. Krishnaraj is a passionate advocate for radiology and has dedicated much of his career to leadership in organized radiology. Most notably, he completed two three-year terms on the Board of Chancellors of the American College of Radiology (ACR), where he chaired the Commission on Patient and Family Centered Care, served on the Executive Committee, and chaired the Governance Committee. He was one of the youngest elected members in ACR's 103-year history. He also served as vice president of the International Society of CT (2015–2023) and president of the Virginia Radiological Society (2021–2024).
His goal throughout has been to reconnect radiologists with their core purpose — healing the sick and serving society — while ensuring radiologic care respects and empowers patients and their families.
The American Medical Association Foundation awarded him its Excellence in Medicine Leadership award in 2012, making him one of only four early-career physicians nationwide to receive the honor. He is an inaugural cohort graduate of the UVA Healthcare Leadership Institute, has been repeatedly recognized on the Best Doctors in America list, and has been honored with the Dean's Award for Clinical Excellence and the Paul Dee Teacher of the Year award at UVA. He is a fellow of both the American College of Radiology and the Society of Abdominal Radiology.

Highlights
Dr. Arun Krishnaraj profile video
Hi. My name's Arun Krishnaraj, and I'm a radiologist at the University of Virginia. One of the things I've really been inspired by is meeting with patients one on one to discuss their images and the implications of that. I think it has a profound impact on an individual to be able to see what the inside of their body looks like, and what's going on with the treatments they're receiving, say for chemotherapy, or efforts they've made to reduce their weight, or improve their health, and being able to see tangible changes on the images of the inside of their body. New patients at UVA can really expect a very patient-friendly and patient-first atmosphere. Radiologists that you can reach if you have questions, a caring staff that is going to prepare you appropriately for the exam that you're going to get, and physicians and staff that are going to get you through that exam with little or no discomfort. Patients can know that by coming to UVA, they are being seen by some of the best doctors in the country, with the latest technologies and innovations, and the most access to clinical trials, and things that are going on in the laboratories, making their way to the bedside.
