Bio & Overview
As a board-certified general surgeon, Joseph Magalski, MD, brings to UVA Health his extensive experience in the entire range of general surgery.
To help his patients recover easier, he specializes in advanced laparoscopic (minimally invasive) and robotic laparoscopic procedures.
His expertise includes:
- Abdominal surgery, including colon and rectal disease
 - Bowel resections for cancer and diverticulitis
 - Abdominal and inguinal hernia, including laparoscopic and robotic laparoscopic repairs
 - Endocrine disorders, including thyroid disease
 - Skin and subcutaneous tissue, including cysts and solid tumors like lipomas
 - Skin cancer removal for squamous and basal cell cancer and melanoma
 - Lymph node biopsy and other oncologic (cancer) surgery
 - Laparoscopic gallbladder removal (cholecystectomy)

“Every patient is different and every operation is different and unique,” Dr. Magalski shares.
“My favorite part of my day is seeing my patients after surgery and how well they feel after a procedure. It still amazes me how little pain is experienced even with minimal pain medication after laparoscopic procedures and especially after robotic laparoscopic hernia repairs.”
Performing surgery in Prince William county for more than 25 years, Dr. Magalski has served on multiple medical boards and committees, including serving as chair of his former department’s surgical services.
“I have seen healthcare change and evolve from many different perspectives. It takes a tremendous amount of work and dedicated staff to provide care for our community,” he shares.
Dr. Magalski grew up in northeastern Pennsylvania. After graduating from the University of Scranton, he earned his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia. He completed residency training in General Surgery at Westchester Medical Center in New York.
He has been board certified by the American College of Surgery since 2000.
He shares, “My father was a dentist and my mother was a dental hygienist, so I was influenced by some of their friends growing up. I initially wanted to go to dental school, but my father convinced me to go into medicine instead. I had an aptitude for working with my hands so surgery was a natural fit early.”
He adds how he “diagnosed” his very first case of appendicitis when he was 18. “I had an appendectomy on Mother’s Day in 3rd grade and remembered how my doctor made the diagnosis. I did the same exact examination on my brother when he was 16 and then we went to the hospital for his surgery."

Highlights
Meet Joseph Magalski, MD
Hi, I'm Joseph Magalski. I'm a general surgeon and I work with UVA Health. We do pretty much any intra-abdominal surgery. We do a lot of laparoscopic procedures and actually nowadays we're doing a lot of our procedures using the robot laparoscopically. We take care of a lot of little minor office procedures, lipomas, sebaceous cysts, a lot of infections and abscesses. General surgery is kind of a wide gamut of stuff, but we pretty much take care of just about everything. I became a doctor because my father was a dentist. A lot of his friends were either dentists or physicians. It always seemed like that was what I was going to go into from day one in medical school. I loved being in the operating room. I loved what the surgeons did. And whether I was on a general surgery rotation, my OBGYN rotation, we got to assist in operations and that just seemed like the place I wanted to be. I really liked doing procedures using the robot. We do a lot of inguinal hernias in the robot, a lot of gallbladders. And one of my favorite days is when the patients come in for their post-ops and they're amazed at how smooth everything went and how little pain they had after the procedure. Well, people should choose UVA because they're going to have a good experience and a smooth experience going through our office from making the appointment, to scheduling surgery, to seeing us in the office and their post-op care. We treat every patient we would treat our own family.
