Bio & Overview
Mark Ahlman, MD, is a professor of radiology and the division director of nuclear medicine and molecular imaging at UVA Health. He is also a physician-scientist with expertise in translational molecular imaging, theranostics, and advanced PET-based applications.
Dr. Ahlman’s clinical activities include:
- Diagnostic interpretation of PET, SPECT, and hybrid imaging (PET/CT, SPECT/CT) across oncology, cardiology, neurology, and inflammatory disease
- Radionuclide therapy for cancer and benign conditions, including targeted theranostic treatments
- Leadership in nuclear medicine service lines, ensuring integration of cutting-edge imaging and therapeutic approaches into patient care
Much of Dr. Ahlman’s academic work has focused on innovation in cardiovascular and inflammatory disease imaging, as well as technical development in PET. His NIH and institutional collaborations have advanced coronary PET-MR imaging through simultaneous cardiac and respiratory motion correction, numerous oncology applications, as well as FDG-PET approaches for vascular inflammation research.
Dr. Ahlman is deeply engaged in medical education, mentoring residents, fellows, and junior faculty, while also contributing to national and international committees shaping the field of nuclear medicine. At UVA, he is committed to expanding access to PET and theranostics and building cross-disciplinary collaborations in molecular imaging.
