Then, he completed a general surgery residency at Carolinas Medical Center (Atrium Health) in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was Chief Resident during the program. He also completed a cancer surgery and surgery education research fellowship at Carolinas Medical Center (Atrium Health).
Dr. Watson also completed a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at the Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans, Louisiana. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery. He is a member of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.

Meet Michael Watson, MD
My name is Michael Watson. I'm a colorectal surgeon with UVA Health. So I am a colorectal surgeon, so that's a wide variety of operations that I perform, large open operations down to minimally invasive surgery, robotic surgery, laparoscopic surgery, that sort of thing. And then the types of patients that I treat is also a wide spectrum, patients with cancer, patients with inflammatory bowel disease like Crohn's disease, or ulcerative colitis. I think the thing that gives me the greatest satisfaction seeing patients when they can leave the office feeling better than when they came in. And that doesn't necessarily mean that I made them better in that office visit. Sometimes it's just having a diagnosis, having someone know that they have a reason for the things that they're feeling, knowing that they have a plan, knowing that they have a physician who will take care of them and will see them through it. I think you should choose UVA for your care because we're a family. It's a small community and a small hospital, but it's a very capable hospital. You're going to get an elite level of care. You're going to have a great experience with all the folks taking care of you and you're going to have it close to home.
