Skarlet Patino-Velasquez, MD, is an interventional cardiologist with expertise treating conditions including coronary artery disease, peripheral vascular disease, structural heart disease, pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, and heart failure.
Her research interests include coronary revascularization, high-risk percutaneous coronary interventions, and outcomes following treatment, with a focus on health equity.
“I am deeply committed to each patient’s well-being, both medically and personally,” she says. “I approach every encounter with compassion and respect and take the time to understand what matters most to my patients. They can trust that I will advocate for them and offer care grounded in the latest science and sincere compassion.”
Patino-Velasquez was born and raised in Bolivia, where she earned her medical degree from Univalle University of Medical Sciences. After relocating to the U.S., she worked in clinical research at the Washington Hospital Center.
She completed her internal medicine residency at Mayaguez Medical Center in Puerto Rico and her cardiovascular disease fellowship at the University of Puerto Rico and the Cardiovascular Center of Puerto Rico. She then completed an advanced fellowship in interventional cardiology and structural heart and peripheral interventions at Wayne State University in Detroit.
Growing up in communities with limited healthcare access shaped her commitment to medicine and advocacy. “Medicine represents the ideal combination of science, humanity, and service,” Patino-Velasquez says.
