Dr. Maranian was born in Boston and grew up in Natick, Massachusetts. From a young age, he was fascinated by human anatomy and physiology and knew he wanted a career that would make a significant difference in his patient’s lives.
He studied biology at Fairfield University and attended medical school at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. After medical school, he entered active duty in the Air Force. Dr. Maranian completed his residency and internship in internal medicine at David Grant Medical Center at Travis Air Force Base, California, and a fellowship in cardiovascular medicine at Wilford Hall Medical Center at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.
He deployed to Iraq as a critical care air transport physician in 2003–2004 and 2006–2007.
As a new Air Force doctor, Dr. Maranian met his wife, who was an Air Force nurse. They have been married since 2001 and have four children. Dr. Maranian is a diehard fan of all the Boston sports teams. He enjoys outdoor exercise, especially running and biking.

Meet Ara Maranian, MD
My name is Ara Maranian. I'm a cardiologist with UVA Health. One of the reasons I chose cardiology was that I felt that it was a specialty where you have great diagnostic tools to really nail down what's going on, and now as each year goes by, more and more therapeutic tools where you can really either alter the disease course or stop the disease course or alter it in a way that's going to be good for the patient. Preventative medicine is something that I'm very passionate about that in cardiology, we have lots of diagnostic tools to find heart disease early now or risk factors for heart disease, and it is definitely a specialty where if you make a difference early, you can completely alter the trajectory of the patient's course. We see patients who come to see us with really no cardiac history but maybe a family history or some risk factors where they're worried about what's going to happen 15 to 20 years down the line. And I always enjoy being able to intervene on those patients to hopefully get them to change lifestyle and maybe adjust medications to try to reduce their heart risk long-term. We see patients who come into the hospital that are very sick, and when you know that you were part of a large team, from the other cardiology providers, to the nursing care, to the ICU, to all the other specialties that get involved, and you realize that somebody had a life-threatening condition, and then they come back and see you later and life is back to normal, that's very satisfying.
