Study Description

UVA Health System, Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Endocrinology is conducting a clinical research study. We want to learn more about how exercise training and an investigational drug that controls blood sugar, affect blood vessels in skeletal and cardiac muscle. You may be eligible if you are 21-60 years of age and have 3 of the 4 following characteristics: 1) overweight; 2) high blood pressure; 3) high fasting blood sugar ( but not diabetic); and /or 4) high cholesterol. You must be a nonsmoker, a non-exerciser, and have never taken the drug Liraglutide

Participation involves a 24-week treatment period. Participants are randomized to either 1) an exercise program, 2) taking the study drug, or 3) an exercise program combined with taking the study drug.
There are 5 outpatient visits:
- 3 outpatient visits (lasting about 1 to 2 hours).
- 2 Outpatient visits (lasting about 9 hours each, and spaced 24 weeks apart).
All visits are during the week, and require blood draws. The study will take approx. 5 months to complete.

Study-related exercise training with a personal trainer, exams and blood labs are provided free of charge.
