The Anesthesiology Department at UVA seeks (1) patients with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease, (2) their spousal caregivers, as well as (3) healthy adults, ages 65 to 90 years-old for a research study. The purpose of the study is to determine why caregivers of patients with Alzheimer’s Disease have a higher rate of developing dementia than the general population.
You may be eligible for this study if:
1. Your life expectancy is not shorter than 3 months.
2. You are age 65 or above.
3. You have not previously participated in this study.
AND
• You do not have any major neurological, cardiac, kidney, or liver disease OR
• You have a diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease OR
• You are the caregiver of a patient who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease.
Study involves coming in to UVA for 2 study visits. The first study visit will take approximately 1 hour. The participants will: 1. Complete a series of questionnaires 2. Provide a sample of exhaled gas (breathe into a plastic bag). 3. Have 1 teaspoon of blood drawn. The second study visit is very brief: the participant will drop off a stool sample at UVA.
