As a family nurse practitioner in the Urology Department, Eva Rellins, MSN, FNP, is part of the team that cares for patients with kidney, prostate and urologic cancers. Her compassionate approach to care means thinking of patients “as if I were them. No patient wants to have cancer and all the associated treatment involved. They didn't ask to be in this situation, and I think it's very important to approach a patient with empathy and understanding.”
Born in Virginia Beach and raised in Broadway, Virginia, Eva has always been fascinated with learning more about cancer – how it develops, treatment options, and the risk factors, and genetics involved. From a young age, she aspired to become an oncology nurse at the UVA Cancer Center.
After earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from Jefferson College of Health Sciences in 2015, Eva joined UVA Health as a registered nurse (RN) in cardiothoracic surgery. She moved to the Cancer Center in 2017 as an infusion RN, administering chemotherapy and biotherapy.
Wanting to be more involved in diagnosis and treatment plan development, Eva earned a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) as a family nurse practitioner from Radford University Carilion in 2021.
“I have absolutely enjoyed working in oncology and cannot see myself working in any other specialty,” Eva says.
Outside of work, Eva, who describes herself as a dog lover, enjoys playing with her beagle mix, Sam.
