As a psychiatrist, Matthew Vanden Hoek, MD, diagnoses and treats mental illnesses, such as depression, anxiety disorders, substance abuse, and schizophrenia.
His clinical interests are public and community psychiatry and forensic psychiatry. Forensic psychiatry requires a sophisticated understanding of the links between mental health and the law. It deals with the assessment and treatment of offenders in prisons, secure hospitals, and the community with mental health problems.
Dr. Vanden Hoek was born in Chicago but spent most of his life in Virginia. He attended Virginia Tech for his undergraduate studies and the University of Virginia for medical school and residency training in psychiatry. He is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
