Prenatal Classes

Get ready for the birth of your baby and new parenthood.

Breastfeeding Basics

Our lactation consultant will help prepare you for breastfeeding. Learn about positioning and helping baby with a correct latch, how your body makes milk and what to expect as your baby grows. You'll also get a book: Breastfeeding 101.

When: First Thursday of every month (some additional class dates may be added), 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

One-Day Childbirth Class

Note: this class does not include baby care information.

This condensed class provides the basics about:

  • Stages of labor
  • Hospital practices
  • Relaxation methods
  • Role of labor support

You'll also get a book: Understanding Birth.

If you attend the Five-Week Evening Class: Preparing for Birth and Baby, you do not need to sign up for the One-Day Childbirth Class. 

When:  May 20, 9:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.
            June 17, 9:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.
            July 15, 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
            August 5, 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
            September 16, 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
            October 21, 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
            November 18, 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
            December 16 , 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Grandparents Class

A class for expectant grandparents and family members. Prepare for the addition to your family by learning what's new in labor and delivery and baby care. We'll review basic safety tips and the latest in baby gear. We'll also discuss how to help the new family in the first year. 

When: July 1, 10 a.m. - noon
           October 7, 10 a.m. - noon

Newborn Care Basics

Learn how to take care of your little one in this two-hour class. We'll cover the world of newborns — their sleeping and eating patterns, the importance of attachment and how to calm a fussy baby. We'll also review baby care basics such as: 

  • Baths
  • Diaper changing
  • When to call the doctor

When: May 15, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
            May 25, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
            June 12, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
            June 22, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
            July 27, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
            August 24, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
            September 28, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
            October 26, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
            November 30, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
            December 14, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Five-Week Evening Class: Preparing for Birth and Baby

Prepare for the birth of your baby by learning all about labor and delivery and how to care for yourself and baby when you go home. We will cover:

  • Signs of labor
  • Stages of the labor process
  • When to come to the hospital
  • Possible interventions
  • Relaxation techniques
  • Role of labor support

We will also tour the labor and delivery and post-partum units and discuss your stay in the hospital.

One of the five evening sessions will cover baby care, typical newborn behavior and basic safety issues.

If you attend the Five-Week Evening Class: Preparing for Birth and Baby, you do not need to sign up for the One-Day Childbirth Class.

When (Tuesday evenings for five weeks):
           July 10 - July 31, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
           August 22 - September 19, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
           October 3 - October 31, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
           November 14 - December 12, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Sibling Class

A one-session class for children ages 2 to 10 who are expecting a new sibling. Interactive play teaches about life with a new baby in the home. A tour of a hospital room is included.

When: June 3, 10 a.m. - 11 a.m.
           August 26, 10 a.m. - 11 a.m.
           November 4, 10 a.m. - 11 a.m.

Class Location

Unless noted otherwise, all classes are located in University Hospital, Room 8614 (unless noted otherwise). Take the 8 East elevator to the eighth floor, and the classroom is down the hall to the right, by the entrance to 8 Central.

Tour Our Labor and Delivery and Mom and Baby Units

Our private tours usually take about a half hour. In addition to seeing the rooms and units, we'll review hospital policies. We'll also provide you with educational resources for having a healthy and happy pregnancy and birth.
