Prenatal Classes

Prenatal Classes

Pregnancy is a time with lots of questions and decisions to make. We've designed our free classes (unless otherwise noted) to support you through your pregnancy and help you prepare for the birth of your baby and new parenthood.

All classes are located in University Hospital, Room 8614 (unless noted otherwise). Take the 8 East elevator to the eighth floor, and the classroom is down the hall to the right, by the entrance to 8 Central.

Breastfeeding Basics

Our lactation consultant will help prepare you for breastfeeding. Learn about positioning and helping baby with a correct latch, how your body makes milk and what to expect as your baby grows. You'll also get a book: Breastfeeding 101.

When: First Thursday of every month (unless otherwise noted), 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

One-Day Childbirth Class

Note: this class does not include baby care information.

This condensed class provides the basics about:

  • Stages of labor
  • Hospital practices
  • Relaxation methods
  • Role of labor support

You'll also get a book: Understanding Birth.

If you attend the Five-Week Evening Class: Preparing for Birth and Baby, you do not need to sign up for the One-Day Childbirth Class. 

When:  January 21, 9:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.
            February 18, 9:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.
            March 18, 9:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.
            April 15, 9:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.
            May 20, 9:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.
            June 17, 9:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Grandparents Class

A class for expectant grandparents and family members. Prepare for the addition to your family by learning what's new in labor and delivery and baby care. We'll review basic safety tips and the latest in baby gear. We'll also discuss how to help the new family in the first year. 

When: January 7, 10 a.m. - noon
           March 4, 10 a.m. - noon
           May 6, 10 a.m. - noon

Newborn Care Basics

Learn how to take care of your little one in this two-hour class. We'll cover the world of newborns — their sleeping and eating patterns, the importance of attachment and how to calm a fussy baby. We'll also review baby care basics such as: 

  • Baths
  • Diaper changing
  • When to call the doctor

When: December 15, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
           January 26, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
           February 23, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
           March 23, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
           April 27, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
           May 25, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
           June 22, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
           

Five-Week Evening Class: Preparing for Birth and Baby

Prepare for the birth of your baby by learning all about labor and delivery and how to care for yourself and baby when you go home. We will cover:

  • Signs of labor
  • Stages of the labor process
  • When to come to the hospital
  • Possible interventions
  • Relaxation techniques
  • Role of labor support

We will also tour the labor and delivery and post-partum units and discuss your stay in the hospital.

One of the five evening sessions will cover baby care, typical newborn behavior and basic safety issues.

If you attend the Five-Week Evening Class: Preparing for Birth and Baby, you do not need to sign up for the One-Day Childbirth Class.

           November 15 - December 13, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
           January 10 - February 7, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
           February 21 - March 21, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
           April 11 - May 9, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
           May 23 - June 20, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
           

Sibling Class

A one-session class for children ages 2 to 10 who are expecting a new sibling. Interactive play teaches about life with a new baby in the home. A tour of a hospital room is included.

When: February 4, 10 a.m. - 11 a.m.
            April 1, 10 a.m. - 11 a.m.
            June 3, 10 a.m. - 11 a.m.

Tour Our Labor and Delivery and Mom and Baby Units

Our private tours usually take about a half hour. In addition to seeing the rooms and units, we'll review hospital policies. We'll also provide you with educational resources for having a healthy and happy pregnancy and birth.
