UVA Health System, Radiology Research: How does air move in the lungs?

UVA Health System, Department of Radiology, seeks healthy volunteers OR those with COPD, cystic fibrosis, and/or those that smoke or have received radiation therapy treatment for a research study.
The purpose of the study is to look at how the air moves in your lungs using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) with xenon and/or helium gas. Study includes spirometry (blowing into a tube connected to a computer), 6-minute-walk test, electrocardiogram, physical exam, chest CT and finger stick depending on your qualifications. Study requires 1-3 visits each lasting about 2-3 hours.

Healthy Adults needed for Heart MRI study.

UVa Health System, Department of Radiology seeks healthy adults ages 21 - 85 with no significant medical problems to participate in a research study.

The purpose of the study is to evaluate the blood flow in the heart muscle in healthy individuals during a stress test. Study involves a blood draw to check kidney function (creatinine) and the volume of red blood cells (hematocrit). A stress test on the heart will be performed using medications and pictures of the heart will be taken by MRI. Study will involve one visit that will last for approximately 2 hours.

Research study for children and adults ages 10 to 21 years old with scoliosis

UVa Health System, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Division of Pediatrics, seeks children and adults ages 10 to 21 with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis for a research study.

The purpose of the study is compare surgical vs non-surgical management of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Study involves filling out a 10 minute questionnaire, clinical photographs, and a routine clinical exam. There will be 4-6 study related visits that correspond to normal clinic follow-ups. Each visit will last approximately 45 minutes.

Lung Imaging Study.

UVa Health System, Department of Radiology, seeks men and women who are healthy and with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis, or smoking for a research study. The purpose of the study is to look at how the air moves in the lungs using inhaled hyperpolarized helium gas with Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). The study involves spirometry (blowing through a tube connected to a computer), electrocardiogram, and a physical exam along with the MRI with inhaled helium. Study procedures can be completed in one 2-4 hour visit.

Hormone Study for Adolescent Girls Between the Ages of 10 - 17

The Center for Research in Reproduction seeks healthy adolescent girls ages 10 – 17 who have started their menstrual cycles for a research study. We are also enrolling girls ages 10 – 17 who have symptoms of high male hormone (excess hair growth, irregular periods). The purpose of the study is to assess whether progesterone and elevated levels of male hormone influences hormone patterns in mid to late puberty in adolescent girls.

Lung Cancer Surgical Trial

UVa Health System, Department of Surgery Division of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery seeks people over age 18 who have had a recent CT scan revealing a lung mass that is thought to be non-small cell lung cancer.

The purpose of this study is to look at whether removal of a small section of the lung (called sublobar resection) is equal to a lobectomy (a larger surgery which takes out an entire section or lobe of the lung). The overall effects (both good and/or bad) of a sublobar resection compared to a lobectomy will be evaluated.

Hormone Study for Girls Ages 7 - 17

The Center for Research in Reproduction seeks healthy adolescent girls ages 7 – 17 to participate in a reproductive hormone study. We are also enrolling girls ages 7 – 17 who have symptoms of high male hormones (excess hair growth, irregular periods). The purpose of the study is to determine how certain hormones contribute to the development of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

The Asthma and Allergic Diseases Center is seeking volunteers for a research study on eczema and asthma.
